19. D. CARLOS DE BRAGANÇA [a.k.a. Dom Carlos I], King of Portugal (1863-1908). Aves de Portugal (sedentarias, de arribação e accidentaes). Estampas: Volume III. Opening remarks by João Pedro Felícia Moreira. Preface by Pedro de Avillez, ed. Introduction by António M. Teixeira. Lisbon: Tribuna da História / Marinha Portuguesa / Banco Espírito Santo, 2006. Volume III. $180.00

Previously unpublished, the 96 full page color illustrations, each depicting a different bird, are numbered 213 through 308, and are reproduced in facsimile from the original work by D. Carlos in the library of the Aquário Vasco da Gama. On the facing page, printed in red and black, is information about the species, including its scientific name, as well as the vernacular name in Portuguese, French, Spanish, English, Italian, German and Russian (where known; sometimes the name is not given in all languages). Toward the end are facsimile reproductions of parts of the King's notebooks. These recently discovered manuscripts and original watercolor illustrations supplement two volumes previously published, in 1903 and 1907, respectively. See Alberto Girard, "A obra scientifica" in J. Collaço, A. Palhares, and R. Torralba, eds., S.M. El-Rei D. Carlos I e a sua obra artistica e scientifica (1908). While the scientific text is indeed the work of King Carlos I of Portugal, it is now known that the watercolors were done by the distinguished Spanish artist Enrique Casanova (1850-1913), a native of Saragosa long resident in Portugal, teacher of D. Luís I, D. Carlos, the Infante D. Afonso, and D. Amélia, D. Luís Filipe, and D. Manuel II. He worked in this instance under the orientation of D. Carlos. See Pamplona, 2nd ed., II, 68-70.

Two volumes, with 40 plates, were published by the Imprensa Nacional in 1903 and 1907. They were reprinted in 1983. An additional 53 plates were discovered at that time in the offices of the Imprensa Nacional—these were issued as a supplement in 1985; all were published together in a single volume by the Imprensa Nacional in 1998. The editor of the present volume has designated the volumes published together by the Imprensa Nacional in 1998 as "Volume I".

In 2001, additional watercolors were discovered in the archives of the Aquário Vasco da Gama. In 2003 the Marinha Portuguesa, Aquário Vasco da Gama, and Lusitania Companhia de Seguros, published 110 full-page color ornithological illustrations in a similar format to the present work, with scientific observations and commentaries written by D. Carlos to support the illustrations. That volume has been designated by the present editor as "Volume II".

The facsimile of the manuscript is preceded by an introduction by Luís de Albuquerque, in which he provides a most useful list of all related manuscripts, followed by a comparison of the information provided about each fleet in this manuscript and in the Livro de Lisuarte de Abreu. Pages 15–25 contain a transcription of all text in the manuscript, organized, as is the manuscript itself, chronologically by the years of the fleets.

FIRST EDITION, with facsimile. The original manuscript of this important sixteenth-century work on shipbuilding is in the Biblioteca Nacional, Lisbon, and has never before been published. Included here are an introductory note by Rogerio S.G. d'Oliveira, a study of the author and his work by F. Contente Domingues and R.A. Baker, notes and bibliography, followed by a transcription of the manuscript, all in both Portuguese and (decent, readable) English; this is followed by the facsimile of the original manuscript.

The author of this work was probably born in 1507, in Aveiro. He led an adventurous life, fleeing to Spain at age 18, returning to Lisbon, then back to Spain, where he embarked at Barcelona for Genoa. Imprisoned on the French galleys, he almost immediately was made pilot, without doubt due to his prior knowledge of navigation. He returned to Lisbon in 1543, but in 1545 reembarked as pilot of a French galley. When the galley was captured by the English, he became a prisoner for the second time. On trial before the Inquisition in 1547, he refused to denounce the English monarch Henry VIII, claiming to have been his servant and to have partaken of his bread; the Inquisition responded by imprisoning him until 1550, and not allowing him full freedom until the following year. In 1552 he embarked on an expedition to aid the King of Velez, in North Africa. All the participants in this expedition were captured, and Oliveira was sent to Lisbon to negotiate the ransoms.

We next encounter him living in the house of D. António da Cunha, where he was once again denounced to the Inquisition—by his host. Despite this, in 1554 D. João III appointed him reviewer of the press of the University of Coimbra. After another spell in prison, 1555-1557, facts about him become scarce. It appears that he was still alive in 1585, and that he got into trouble once again, this time for opposing the rule of Philip II.

Oliveira is perhaps best known for his Gramatica da lingoagem portuguesa (Lisbon, 1536) and Arte da guerra do mar (Lisbon, 1555). His manuscript "Viagem de Fernão de Magalhães . . . ," the original of which is in the Leiden University Library, has gone through four different twentieth-century editions.

Facsimile reprint of the "first account of Indian matéria médica and the first text-book on tropical medicine written by a European . . . It is the third book printed in India . . ." (Garrison-Morton 1815). Orta's observations are of great importance from a scientific point of view, as he was the first to provide a description of Asian cholera, and his method of treatment, which contained bezoar-stone and opium, was the earliest recorded attempt to treat the disease. His many descriptions of previously unknown plants, and comments on their medicinal uses, have earned him lasting fame.

Orta was born in 1501 or 1502 at Elvas, the son of Jews forced to flee Spain. Like his contemporary Monardes he studied medicine at the University of Salamanca and at Alcalá de Henares for 10 years, but did not receive a degree. In 1534 he sailed as king's physician to India, where he remained until his death in 1568.
