From 1753 to
the end of the century the most famous Italian lyric poets
performed by special invitation at an opera house built for
that purpose at the royal country palace of Salvaterra de
Magos. Another attraction was hunting: game preserves with
their own rules existed from 1569. Falconry was also a
recreation of great fame. The palace at Salvaterra,
established in the fourteenth century, was embellished by
D. Luís (son of D. Manuel I) during the Renaissance, and
enlarged, coincidentally with the eighteenth–century
reconstruction of Lisbon, by the architects João Pedro
Lodovice and Carlos Mardel to receive D. João V and D. José
I. Only the chapel survives today.

First published
1991. Xutos & Pontapés are a Portuguese rock band,
formed in Almada, Portugal in 1978, 4 years after the 25
April Revolution. They started off in the local punk rock
scene and set the trend - singing rock tunes in Portuguese.
Over the years, their sound evolved to a rock style mixed
with pop, hard rock and punk music. After 3 decades of
studio and live albums, Xutos & Pontapés continue to be
considered Portugal's top rock band influencing new
generations of Portuguese bands. Their sound can be
described as a mix of rock, hard rock and punk music. In
2004 the band was awarded a state decoration by Portuguese
President Jorge Sampaio, for 25 years of career
achievements in the music industry. Current members from
the original line up: Tim (bass/vocals), Zé Pedro (guitar),
João Cabeleira (guitar), Kalú (drums) and Gui (sax). Fans
refer to the band as Xutos. Both 'xutos' and 'pontapés' are
words in reference to two types of kicks ('xutos' for
kicking a ball, and 'pontapés' for kicks in the shin).
