Editorial Notícias, 1996. Colecção Excelsior. 8°, orig.
illus. wrps. 277 pp. ISBN: 972-46-0801-8. $28.00
Sancirilo, a
dictatorship, prepares for its annual miracle: an amphora
in which the blood of St. Cyril liquefies on the 15th of
November, at 11:18 A.M. The miracle forms the basis of the
only income for this "integralista" country. Amado Mestre,
the Supreme leader of Sancirilo is gravely ill, and in need
of a transfusion of a rare blood type, probably identical
to that of the Saint. Meanwhile, Elias Brósio, Judas Ormin
and Esdras Harpix are engaged in a struggle to see who will
succeed to power. Silas, a simple chauffeur and
enthusiastic defender of the regime, at last begins to
reveal his true thoughts. The author, born in Chacim,
Macedo de Cavaleiros, Trás-os-Montes, in 1941, displays a
certain ruralism in his early poetry, and in much of his
fiction. He has written several historical novels set in
his native region. In addition to fiction and poetry, he

Colecção Romance Histórico. 8°, orig. illus. wrps. 271 pp.,

First published
in Rio de Janeiro, 1998 with the title Fera de
Macabu: História e o romance de um condenado à
Morte. There is also a
Rio de Janeiro 1999 edition. The plot concerns what is
widely considered the greatest instance of judicial error
to occur in nineteenth-century Brazil. The planter Manoel
da Motta Coqueiro (1802?-1855) from Macaé, in the North of
Rio de Janeiro province, was condemned to death and hanged
for a murder he did not commit. It was then discovered that
he had been framed by political opponents. The Emperor D.
Pedro II had refused to grant clemency; afterwards he was
so affected by the obvious defects in the justice system
that he henceforth would not allow further executions,
effectively ending capital punishment in Brazil.

The author is a
native of Benguela, Angola. His parents were Portuguese.
While most recent Portuguese novels about Africa have been
war stories, this one deals with a region in the center of
Angola as Independence nears. It depicts the mixed feelings
of the whites as they try to decide whether to flee or
remain, and later as they are drawn into the conflict
between the MPLA and UNITA. The narrative is also full of
the Umbundu culture.

date 1998, would seem to indicate that there have been some
revisions or additions; however, this is nowhere confirmed
internally, and we have not been able to compare this
volume with earlier editions.
